Packing guide
How to pack your boxes
Good packing protects your items and keeps your price down. Here's what works best.
Choose the right box
- Use a strong, double-wall cardboard box in good condition. Avoid old boxes with tears or soft corners.
- Pick a box that fits the contents snugly. Empty space costs money and lets items move.
- Each box can weigh up to 30 kg (67 lb). Split heavier loads into several boxes.
Pack the contents
- Wrap fragile items one by one in bubble wrap and keep them in the middle of the box.
- Fill gaps with paper or soft packing so nothing moves when you shake the box.
- Put liquids, creams and foods in sealed bags, then wrap them again.
- Remove batteries from devices where you can, and keep electronics in their original packaging if possible.
Seal and label
- Tape every seam with strong packing tape in an “H” pattern, top and bottom.
- Write the receiver's name, full address and phone number on the box, and put a copy inside too.
- Remove or cover old labels and barcodes.
Size, weight and how price is worked out
Like all carriers, we charge by whichever is greater: the actual weight or the volumetric weight (how much space the box takes up).
| Measured in | Volumetric weight |
|---|---|
| Inches and pounds | Length × Width × Height ÷ 139 |
| Centimetres and kilograms | Length × Width × Height ÷ 5000 |
Example: a 20 × 16 × 16 inch box has a volumetric weight of about 37 lb, even if it only weighs 25 lb. A snug box saves money.
Boxes up to 50 inches on any side are fine for most services. For bigger items, pallets, crates or barrels, ask us first.
Make a packing list
Customs needs to know what's inside. List each item, how many, and its value in US dollars. Clear lists clear customs faster; vague ones like “gifts” or “personal items” cause delays.
